Ephesians 4:11-16 (NIV)

11 It was he who gave1 some to be apostles,2 some to be prophets,3 some to be evangelists,4 and some to be pastors and teachers,5

12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ6 may be built up7

13 until we all reach unity8 in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God9 and become mature,10 attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.11
14 Then we will no longer be infants,12 tossed back and forth by the waves,13 and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.14
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love,15 we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head,16 that is, Christ.
16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows17 and builds itself up18 in love,19 as each part does its work.

Mark 9:24 (NIV)

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief !”

DEVOTION- Suzanne Dyer (California)

I used to think that faith has a static quality, that a person possesses either all or none of it.  But through the years I have learned that faith can waver.  When our faith is strong, it is important to show our faith through our actions and in our words.  Because of our faith, others can claim the courage to believe when belief seems impossible.  They can be made strong again because they can, in their doubt, trust in our faith.

When our faith is weak or when we question or doubt, we can rely on the faith of those around us.  In times of struggle and transition, I always know my friends are praying for me.  Despite their own afflictions, they have the faith to rally for me.  In their devotion and steadfastness, I see God working through them.

It is okay to cling to the faith of others.  God’s church was designed to be a community of interdependent believers.  Abiding faith will draw the seekers and sustain the doubters.  When our faith is strong, we can reach out in Christian  concern for those around us; even amid a world of doubt, we can reassure others that faith abides.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Believers are an interdependent community.

PRAYER: Dear God, remind us to share our living and active faith with others when our faith wavers.  Amen.
