Psalm 57:1-11 (NRSV)

1 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, until the destroying storms pass by.

2 I cry to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
3 He will send from heaven and save me, he will put to shame those who trample on me. (Selah) God will send forth his steadfast love and his faithfulness.
4 I lie down among lions that greedily devour a human prey; their teeth are spears and arrows, their tongues sharp swords.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. Let your glory be over all the earth.
6 They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my path, but they have fallen into it themselves. (Selah)
7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast. I will sing and make melody.
8 Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn.
9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your steadfast love is as high as the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the clouds.
11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. Let your glory be over all the earth.

Psalm 57:8 (NRSV)

8 Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn.

DEVOTION -Ted De Hass (Iowa)

Contestants on a popular television show were asked to answer the question, “How do people begin the day?”  The number one answer drawn from a survey was “with prayer.”  I want to start my day with prayer.  Before washing my face, shaving, eating breakfast, getting the news on television, and setting out on the day’s tasks, I want to spend time wit the Lord.

I know that “one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4); so each morning I dip into the scripture.  I pray for myself and my needs.  I intercede for others as the Holy Spirit moves me.  Often, I pray the Lord’s Prayer.  As I pray, I remember that God is my heavenly Father.  I ask for sustenance, forgiveness, and deliverance.  I pray that above all, God may be glorified.  Beginning my day this way helps me put my faith first and focus on God all day long.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Today I will begin my day with God.

PRAYER: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed by the name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever (Matt. 6-9, KJV).  Amen.
