Hebrews 12:1-4 (NIV)

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. 4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV)

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

DEVOTION -Deanne Ruedemann (Texas)

During our son’s junior year, his high-school basketball team was in the state championship game.  His dad and I sat in the stands, watching as our son went to the free throw line time after time being fouled.  Everyone in the arena had their eyes on him as he effortlessly made each shot.  His team not only won the championship, but our son was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

The fans may have thought our son was just lucky to be able to make those difficult shots under so much pressure, but we knew the truth.  For the last three years, he had spent hours in the gym -almost daily and often alone-standing at the free throw line practicing these important shots.

Watching my son’s diligent practice and subsequent success was a reminder of how my daily practice of Bible reading and prayer has helped me prepare for the challenges of pain, despair, anger, temptation, sickness, and impatience.  Just as my son would not have made those shots during the game without having practiced, my spiritual practice helps me to grow in my faith and face life’s problems with greater trust in God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Spiritual maturity comes from a lifetime of diligence.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, help us to delight in spending time with you every day.  Amen.
