1 Peter 4:7-11 (NRSV)

7 The end of all things is near;  therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10 Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. 11 Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

 1 Peter 4:10 (NRSV)

10 Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.

DEVOTION – Irina Ivanova (Pskov, Russia)

My friend told me about an incident from her youth.  One day someone brought her a piece of beautiful material from abroad – at a time when a storage in our country made it impossible to find such cloth for sale.  My friend immediately sewed herself a fashionable dress.  But she was reluctant to wear it because she felt that such a dress would make her stand out too much.  Time passed.  She moved the dress from shelf to shelf but never wore it.  Hidden from people’s eyes for many years, it never served its owner.

This story reminded me of the biblical parable about the talents.  One man’s talent was put to good use and brought no benefit to its owner.  (See Matt. 25:14-30.)  The same is true of our talents, gifts, and potential.  If we save up our talents and put them away for future possibilities, they are useless – however precious and valuable they may be.  Instead, when we use our talents, God multiples their benefit – to us to those we seek to serve.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:Our Talents are meant to be used to serve our neighbors.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, you have generously blessed each of us with a special gift of talent.  Help us to put our talents to use in serving you and the world.  Amen.
