Psalm 119:92-102 (NRSV)

92 If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my misery. 93 I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life. 94 I am yours; save me, for I have sought your precepts. 95 The wicked lie in wait to destroy me, but I consider your decrees. 96 I have seen a limit to all perfection, but your commandment is exceedingly broad. 97 Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all day long. 98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is always with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your decrees are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts. 101 I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. 102 I do not turn away from your ordinances, for you have taught me.

Deuteronomy 8:3 (NRSV)

3 He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

DEVOTION -Gale A. Richards

Military service members anxiously await letters from home.  When a letter comes, they open it carefully, read it slowly, think about it, and then read it again and again until the words are memorized.  On days of dangerous duty, one thing that can keep them going is knowing that someone at home cares about them.

We are in God’s service, and God has sent us a letter from home.  The Bible is like a letter from God to God’s people in the world.  It explains God’s hopes for us; it tells us that we are in God’s thoughts and assures us of God’s eternal love.

Just as young military men and women treasures letters from home, we can treasure God’s letter to us.  We can treat it with reverence, read it, think about it, and memorize it.  God will become such a part of our lives that others will see God through our actions.  In dangerous times, when sin abounds, God’s grace and caring will guide and protect us.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God’s word provides nourishment for our daily journey.

PRAYER: Dear God, your word lights our path, comforts us in despair, and gives us strength.  Help us to learn and live your truth every day.  Amen.
