Matthew 5:43-48 (NRSV)

43 “You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters,  what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew  5:45 (NRSV)

45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.

DEVOTION – Voly Georgieva Koruderlieva (Varna, Bulgaria)

Some years ago I lost my job, and I was on public assistance.  Then one day while I was riding the bus, someone robbed me and took my purse.  I was very upset; this was the first time I had suffered this type of abuse.  I did not worry about the money because I had only a small amount in my purse.  The big problem for me was that my purse contained my card for the labor market.  Without it I would not receive my unemployment benefits.

In a few days I was able to regain my sense of peace.  Also, I began to pray for the person who stole my purse.  I hoped that this man had been in need and that my money would help him.  However, I asked God to help me find my documents.  And this happened!  I received a call from the labor market; a young man had found my purse and had taken it there.

I sought God’s help every day, and God heard my prayers.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Today I will trust in the power of prayer.

PRAYER: Thank you, O God, for your goodness and for your steadfast love that endures forever.  Amen.
