Psalm 8:1-9 (NIV)

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.  2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?  5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.  6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands;  you put everything under his feet:  7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,  8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8:3-4 (CEB)

When I look up at the skies, at what your fingers made – the moon and the stars that you set firmly in place – what are human beings that you think about them…that you pay attention to them?

DEVOTION – Pam Pointer (Wiltshire, England)

When my granddaughter, Lucy, was two years old, we went for a walk to post a letter.  On the way to the mailbox, we saw the moon, a great, bright, white orb hanging in the black sky; and she was filled with wonder.  Months later, she still talked about it.  We adults take the moon for granted.  We know it’s there, we expect to see it on nights when the sky is clear, and sometimes we ponder that humans have stood on it.

Imagine the psalmist outside at night, centuries before street lights.  Perhaps the writer of Psalm 8 sat on a hillside looking after a flock, lying back, keeping an eye on the sheep while gazing at the heavens.  Psalm 8 captures the wonder of the night sky that Lucy felt.  The psalmist realizes how tiny and insignificant we are compared to the magnitude of the sky.

Even as the psalm recognizes how small we are, it acknowledges the worth God gives us.  Human beings are the pinnacle of God’s creation.  We are special.  Look at the moon, marvel at the stars, and be thankful for the value God puts on you.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: In the vastness of the universe, God holds each of us tenderly.
