1 Corinthians 3:5-11 (NIV)

5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe–as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8 The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:14 (NRSV)

How are they to call on one in whom they have not believed?  And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard?  And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him?

DEVOTION – Minerva Perez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic)

When I was young our family vacationed at our family’s small farm home.  I saw farm workers plow the land and plant seed.  They were followed by another set of workers who watered the crops.  In time and with careful tending by the workers, plants sprouted, then grew and matured to bear fruit.  Then other workers harvested the fruit.

Jesus spoke of another kind of harvest, a harvest of souls.  I was part of our church’s evangelism team.  We visited in the community to tell people about Christ.  Hearing the gospel did not persuade all of the people I visited.  At times I felt sad, thinking I had not done my best.  However, the important thing to remember is that those who were not persuaded at first may still come to follow Christ.

I realized that God’s word is powerful.  When God’s word is proclaimed and shared, it is like a seed that germinates when the climate is right.  Then sun, rain, and caring hands contribute to its growth.  We are God’s farm hands to proclaim the good news – some planting, some nurturing, some seeing the harvest.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: How am I helping others come to know and follow Christ?

PRAYER:  Creator God, thank you for all your messengers who proclaim the good news of your saving love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
