Psalm 119:105-112 (NIV)

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. 106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. 107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, O LORD, according to your word. 108 Accept, O LORD, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws. 109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law. 110 The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts. 111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart. 112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

Psalm 119:105 (NIV) Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

DEVOTION – Michael Morelan (Alabama)

For many years I was a Boy Scout leader.  I enjoyed teaching young boys about the outdoors, about living in and moving though forests and woodlands. Having the right equipment and knowing how to use it can mean the difference between sleeping in a warm tent and shivering all night in cold, wet bedding.  I’ve done both, and believe me, it is much nicer to be warm and dry.

Sometimes the boys and I would drive to one area to camp and then hike to our final campsite.  Invariably, someone would leave something important back in the cars.  And almost always it wasn’t until dark that the forgotten article was missed or needed.

Recovering the needed article always involved a trip back to the parking area…in the dark.  So out came the flashlight.  After a number of those treks in the dark, I realized that God’s word is something like that flashlight of mine.  God promised a light for my path – just enough light to help me take the next few steps to where I am going.  I need to know that God leads me.  I need to trust God.  I need to remember that God’s grace is sufficient for all my days.

Today and every day, in the words of scripture God gives “a lamp for my feet, a light for my path.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God gives us light for a few steps at a time.

PRAYER: Thank you, O Lord, for giving us what we need today.  Thank you for your light that shines on us no matter how dark our path may beome.  Amen.

PRAYER FOCUS: Someone on a dark path
