Romans 5:6-116 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Romans 5:8 (NIV) – God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

DEVOTION – Ramonita Rodriguez Sanchez (Puerto Rico)

While sweeping the patio one day, I found a coin.  I picked it up and noticed how grimy it was.  I felt it was not worth cleaning and threw it away.  Almost immediately the thought occurred to me that though the coin was thoroughly dirty, it had the same value as always.

So, too, I thought, Jesus Christ washed my sins away, and I remain a worthy child of the One who first created me.  I felt sad as I thought of people whose circumstances or way of life impedes our seeing their true worth.  As a result, we fail to offer them our assistance.  What would have become of us if the Lord had dealth with us as I first dealth with the coin?  I give thanks that God sees our worth and never throws anyone away.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: No matter how grimy we may be, we still have the same worth that God placed in us from our beginning.

PRAYER: Loving God, thank you for making your mercy and grace available to us.  We pray as Jesus taught us, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed by thy name.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliever us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOCUS: Those who have not heard the good news
